Territorial Understanding: Sierra Mixe de Oaxaca

[Coatlán Community + IIFL + FHMM + Comunal]

rom the earthquakes that occurred in Chiapas and Oaxaca on September 7 and 23 (2017), the Santa María Nativitas Coatlán community was clear about the way it wanted to rebuild: "the way we build our houses is the intelligence of our ancestors and we want to preserve that wisdom".

In conjunction with the Institute of Philologies of the UNAM and FHMM we started a process of social feasibility, damage census, active participatory investigation of the ways of living, analysis of the failures in the traditional vernacular housing for its improvement, registration of the local formula to make adobes and the processes related to medium-scale production.

To face this great challenge, in addition to the previous processes, territorial understanding sessions were held through participatory cartographies to generate the production strategy of the 100,000 pieces of adobe that were needed to rebuild the houses.
