Territorial Understanding: Sierra Mixe de Oaxaca

[Coatlán Community + IIFL + FHMM + Comunal]

From the earthquakes that occurred in Chiapas and Oaxaca on September 7th and 23th (2017), the community of Santa María Nativitas Coatlán was clear about the way in which they wanted to rebuild their homes: "the way we build our houses is the intelligence of our ancestors and we want to preserve that wisdom".  Together with the Institute of Philologies of the UNAM and FHMM we started a social process to accompany the inhabitants in the defense of their traditional ways of living, which are directly related to their cultural identity. Each of the phases of the project was carried out collectively: damage census, active participatory research to systematize local ways of life, analysis of the failures in traditional housing for its structural improvement in the event of earthquakes, analysis of types of earth, participatory cartography and structural resistance tests to understand the strength of adobes. All the steps taken led to the generation of a comprehensive reconstruction strategy for the reconstruction of 150 homes.
