Midwife house

[Network of midwives Un sólo corazón + Comunal]

The midwives of the municipality of Tenejapa (State of Chiapas) organized in a self-managed way to attend to the biggest health problem in their locality: the high rate of infant and maternal mortality.

Despite having managed to reduce the mortality rate of women and children to zero in 22 communities in the region, the midwives do not have an appropriate place to provide care, which is why they use their homes as delivery houses. This situation generates complications for their families since they must give up their home to the women who will be cared for.

The project consists of designing birthing houses in a participatory way and building with three midwives from the network: Lucía in the Bajchen community, María in El Retiro and Lucía de Matzam. The project is an initiative of the network of midwives "Un solo corazón A.C." and "Mesoamérica Profunda A.C.", an organization in charge of obtaining the necessary resources for the process and construction.
